Miss Hispanic History
(Research by Z. Noelia Arroyo) Miss Hispanic Delaware Pageant has been in existence since 1972 when it was first held in the activity room of Saint Paul's CatholicChurch located at 4th & Jackson Street in Wilmington. The winner was Miss Andreita Burgos.

The pageant was held the following year and the title went to Miss Olga Collazo and was held at the same location. The pageant then went into hiatus and was not held again until 1977 when it became part of a week long celebration called "Semana Hispana." Councilman Ortega, Mike Hernandez and Ronald Arms among others organized the activities for the week.

As the community grew so did the activities during the weeklong celebration. Organized by The Hispanic Festival, the pageant continues to be one of the more popular events of what is now known as Hispanic Heritage Month. The month serves to bring attention to the celebration of life, work, culture and traditions of Hispanics in the state of Delaware. The pageant, in particular, gives young women in the Hispanic community a chance to build self-esteem and confidence as it helps to retain cultural and ethic traditions. It also serves as an opportunity to showcase the talents, intelligence and beauty of our young Hispanic women by giving them a chance to represent the ever-growing Hispanic community in Delaware to create public awareness of the many contributions that Hispanics have made in the community and the state. |
